Backround: Bearnas was born in Mossflower where he learned to build boats and ships from the otters there. he sailed off to sea with a band of them one day when they were attacked by sea rats. It was a grisly battle, and in its highpoint the skipper was slain by the evil rat captain. Grief coursing through him, Bearnas slaughtered the pirate lord by smashing his skull with his colliding fists( hence "the Smasher"). Ultimately, the battle ended in a draw as all the sea rats lay dead, and most of the the otters died later from wounds, starvation or thirst in the icy sea. Bearnas, however, survived when his massive frame was washed up on the rocks of Salamandastron and was rescued by the fighting hares. It would be a whole winter before the badger was well again, but his left paw retained deadly scars the made it nearly unusable. Upon recovery, he immediately befriended the hares. He spent long days marching, fighting, and communicating with the Long Patrol Hares. After one season of his arrival, the hares named him their Badger Lord to rule over Salamandastron and the Long Patrol.
